Over the years, broadcast scholars and historians have written volumes on the inventors and entrepreneurs that pushed back the frontiers in media technology, from Bell to Gates, and from Edison to Berners-Lee. But left buried in the footnotes are the women, and the women and men of color who often failed to receive due credit for creating significant channels of content and media we take for granted. This panel will exhume the great contributions of important entrepreneurs, from post-Civil War’s Granville T. Woods, called “Black Edison,” to the vice president for engineering at tech giant Google, Marian Croak, among others.
